Fundamentals Course

Short Description

We understand that it can be difficult to take a full weekend out of the calendar for a 2-day course. Therefore we're offering a 4-evenings fundamentals course. We meet Mondays and Wedensdays at 17.00-21.00 for two weeks. **NOTE! YOU MUST BOOK ALL 4 DAYS**. If you already have a taken an introduction course with NPF you can skip the first day (contact us).

Course Details

What's Included

1. Everything you need to paddle: a sea kayak, paddle and paddling equipment. 2. Våttkort paddle certificate after a completed course. 3. Loads of fun!

We Recommend That You Bring

1. Long wool underwear. 2. Sunglasses. 3. Sunscreen. 4. Camera to capture the action 5. Towel. 6. Lunch, snacks & water.

Where & When

This is a course over four evenings, with a total of 16 hours on the water. We meet at Sollerudstranda in Lysaker (see map) at 17.00 Mondays and Wedensdays.

Full Day Plan

Day 1/4

Everyone meet at our kayak container on Sollerudstranda at Lysaker 17.00. The container is located in the harbour at the beach. If you are unable to find it, meet our instructor on the beach. If you arrive by car, you can park your car here.

We’ll start off with a welcome and introduction to the course. Today we’ll cover the topics:

  • Introduction to the clothing and equipment for sea kayaking
  • Introduction to the kayak and how to adjust it to sit comfortably. 
  • Forward paddling
  • Sweep stroke
  • Draw stroke
  • Buddy rescue

Every session will end at 21.00 where we’ll sum up the day.

Day 2/4

We’ll meet at 17.00 at Sollerudstranda in Lysaker. 

We’ll start off with a welcome and a recap of the last time. Today we’ll cover the topics:

  • Draw-stroke (moving the kayak sideways)
  • Low-brace to avoid capsize
  • Edging the kayak
  • Paddling in a figure of eight and circles using the edge
  • Alternative buddy rescues

Day 3/4

We’ll meet at 17.00 at Sollerudstranda in Lysaker. 

We’ll start off with a welcome and a recap of the last time. Today we’ll cover the topics:

  • More efficient forward paddling
  • Paddling day trips
  • Basic seamanship
  • Identifying signs and safe water
  • Self rescue

Day 4/4

We’ll meet at 17.00 at Sollerudstranda in Lysaker. 

We’ll start off with a welcome and a recap of the last time. Today we’ll cover the topics:

  • Sculling
  • Improving balance
  • Paddling in wind
  • Rudder

At the end of the session you will recieve the NPF våttkort.
